Microsoft has released a new version of Windows 11 File Explorer that supports tabs

Support for Windows Tabs is a frequently requested feature on Feedback Hub. In the past, Microsoft attempted to introduce the capability to customers through Windows Sets.

While development on Windows Sets was finally shelved, Microsoft has not abandoned the concept of tabs in File Explorer.

As part of the Hybrid work event, Microsoft formally announced that future preview versions will include a redesigned File Explorer. The tabs feature is now enabled in internal builds of Explorer, and users may be able to use it later this year.

While Microsoft has yet to include a new File Explorer in Windows 11 preview releases, it has teased its new look at the event.

Tabs in Explorer appear to be comparable to tabs in Microsoft Edge. Users appear to be able to create new tabs as well as drag and drop tabs.

Tabs are enabled by default, and we're not sure if you can turn them off.

According to the firm, File Explorer is now cloud-powered, and users will receive file suggestions from their Microsoft 365 account. If you have a Microsoft 365 licence, this will make it easier to discover what you're searching for and see all files in one spot.

These new features are planned to be included in Windows 11 version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2)
